Editor’s Letter: With Gratitude

As we step into this holiday season, I’m reminded of something simple: communities aren’t built in grand gestures, they’re built in small, steady acts of care. A warm meal handed across a table. A neighbor stops by with tools when they hear you hammering alone. A stranger becoming a friend because you both showed up at the right moment, ready to try again.

This year, The Makers’ Forge has carried the stories of people who do exactly that, people who create, repair, build, grow, nurture, and share. People who may not have titles or platforms, but who change their neighborhoods by being who they are. And during the holidays, their work shines brighter. It reminds us that generosity isn’t only financial; sometimes it’s time, kindness, skill, or a willingness to show up even when no one is watching.

“Home for the Holidays” became our theme for this issue not because it sounds cozy, but because it speaks to something deeper that so many families in Milwaukee, and across Wisconsin, are searching for: safety, belonging, stability, and a place where they can breathe for a moment without fear of what comes next.

HOME IS CREATED TOGETHER

Whether that home is a small apartment filled with laughter, a workshop where a maker brings their ideas to life, a community center where volunteers gather, or a dream we are still fighting to build, the truth is this: home is created together. It is a shared effort.

As we close out 2025, I want to extend heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has supported our work, from the makers who opened their doors to us, to the volunteers who kept giving even when they were tired, to the readers who believed in this vision before it had walls, programs, or a budget.

Next year, Sustainable Farmstead Solutions will take major steps forward. And The Makers’ Forge will continue telling the stories of the people who made those steps possible, the builders, growers, fixers, thinkers, dreamers, and doers.

May this season bring you warmth, connection, and a reminder that even small acts have the power to change a life. Thank you for being part of this community.

Thank you for forging the future with us.
